Maintaining a Routine While Working From Home

A significant percentage of the global workforce is currently working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, it’s important to create a work from home routine to help you stay happy and engaged.

The conveniences of working at home can also become a challenge. A normal commute or a lunch with co-workers may offer some downtime and it’s possible that many people are currently feeling unsettled.

Here are some ways to help create structure while working from home:

  1. Start the day right
Prepare yourself for a normal working day. Set an alarm for your normal time and dress for a day in the office. This can help you prepare mentally and physically for the day ahead.
  2. Have a set workspace
Working from a desk or a set space, like you would do if you were in the office, will achieve a working mind-set. A proper desk and ergonomic work chair will help optimize your working space.
  3. Stay connected with your work team
If you work as part of a team, check in regularly with them. As well as using email and messaging programs, set up regular check-ins via phone or video conferencing. In addition to discussing work projects, see how they are coping. Many people will be feeling uncertain about the situation and being isolated at home could amplify these feelings.
  4. Take a break
With an increased amount of time spent indoors, the end of the workday can easily melt into the evenings. Remember to take breaks as you would at the office. If you find that you work best in the evenings, structure your day to help maintain your work-life balance.
